Batting & Backings

Today I focused on getting backings and batting cut for the quilt tops I’ve recently finished. I already had the backing for Starfire so I cut batting and it’s ready to quilt.

I purchased a wide bandanna print for the cowboy kids top and all I needed to do was cut off some of the width, well, length really. I cut the batting and it’s ready to go.

For the scrappy mountain top, I needed to piece the backing to get the width I needed. I knew I had enough fabric to match the large print and I’m quite pleased with the job I did! I had not cut off the extra on the side yet in this picture……the fronds will run vertically.

I’d read several tutorials & ended up using glue. I ironed over a half inch seam on the first piece, then laid it right side up on my second piece. Then I moved the top fabric around until the pattern aligned. Using Elmer’s washable school glue in a small tip applicator, I put about a 4” line of glue on the folded over seam and carefully laid it down on the second fabric, aligning the pattern. I used a dry iron to dry the glue and continued like that for the rest of the seam. Then I opened it up and sewed down the ironed seam line. Worked like a charm 😃

And know now all three are ready for their turn on Sophie.

Happy quilting, Cherie

  1. That is a good day's work! The matching job for the scrappy mountain back looks so good! I never thought about using glue to help hold the fabric in place. In the past I have pressed one side back, laid the fabric to line up the print, then used blue painters tape to hold the fabric in place for sewing. I just have to be careful to not sew too deep so I don't catch the tape in the seam. I am sure it would be a pain to try and remove it. LOL!!

  3. Sophie is going to get a workout soon! The Jane Sassamon backing print looks perfect. You'd never know there was a seam there. I've used that method to match prints for backings, and it works well for me, too.
