Roll, Roll Cotton Boll Quilted!

On the 5th day of December 2025 I finished quilting Roll, Roll Cotton Boll. She’s a big one, coming in at 85” x 100”.

The first thing DH said was it has frogs ๐Ÿธ , lol. And it does, frogs and polka dots, oh my!

RRCB is my oldest UFO with the top being pieced at least 14 years ago. This was the 2010 Bonnie Hunter Quiltville mystery quilt. It’s on my fall UFO list so I’m going to do some quilt wrangling to get it trimmed and the binding sewn on.

Linking up to Alycia’s with Finished (or not) Friday.

Potholders & RRCB

I had a couple comments about my potholders so when I pulled several out of the dryer, I thought I’d share the older model and the new style. The ones on the left were sewed and turned right side out which I could manage because they have one layer of batting and one layer of Insul-brite. They work okay as you can see they’ve seen some use, but I wanted to add another layer of batting, thus the ones on the right that have binding. They washed up quite well.

The layers are stacked and pinned and I am ready to add the binding to the new ones.

Sophie and I have been busy quilting Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll and the end is in sight!

I think I can finish this quilt before year end, yes, I think I can ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Happy quilting, Cherie

Catch Up Post Thanksgiving

We hosted family for Thanksgiving with everyone bringing food so it was pretty stress free. DH cooked the turkey on the Big Green Egg and it was fabulous…..moist & tender. Yum! So many things to be thankful for this year.

I have finished the 12 cheddar solids blocks and can sew them together now. Then it’s just waiting for The Fat Quarter shop to get back to me on the correct Bella colors.

I received a request for jar covers to keep dust and fruit flies out of the kombucha. I’m waiting on delivery of the elastic but these are ready to go otherwise.

At Thanksgiving it was noticed I made our potholders (um, yeah, lol) and I thought I’d use some crumb blocks to make some that family members can take at Christmas if they want to. I used corduroy to back the last ones I made and really like it so that’s what I’m using on these. Below it’s the checked pieces in back along with binding leftovers in front.

For the group below I’m using grey corduroy.

I layer the backing, batting, insulbright, batting and the top. Then I sew the binding on the front side. I hand sew the binding down and put a simple star stitch in the center through all the layers, no other quilting. So far, we like this model the best.

Currently, we have a steady snow coming down with probably 4-6 inches accumulated so far. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

‘Tis the season! Cherie

Pre-Thanksgiving Friday

I’m linking up with Alycia’s Finished (or not) Friday. I can report I’ve finished all 40 uphill and 40 downhill scrappy mountain majesty (SMM) blocks, whoop, whoop!

It will either be very easy or very frustrating getting these SMM blocks laid out, lol. I’m working on the Starfire units to free up the design wall.

I quilted a couple more passes on RRCB.  Both Sophie and the quilter did well ๐Ÿค“. I do better quilting in short sessions…….it will be finished soon enough.

I’ve made progress on the backing for Quadrangle. I over cut some 2” orange pieces so I’m noodling over how to incorporate them.

And in other news, Julie let me know the fabrics for the cheddar solids quilt are Moda Bella and suggested I contact the Fat Quarter Shop about sending them a swatch to color match. Done & in the mail!! I went ahead and asked to match the cheddar as well……then I can use it for the backing if I want. I decided I’d be happier getting as close of match as I can and will sew up the non-matching HST’s and start yet another project ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚. Thanks for your thoughts about my dilemma !

Thankfully, Cherie

Quilting Started and Backing Play

I spent some time with Sophie, my longarm, and quilted a bit of Roll Roll Cotton Boll (RRCB). Sophie is quilting well. The quilter, she is a bit rusty. RRCB needs concentration because it’s hard to see where I’ve quilted, although you can see it in the side picture below, lol. I love the green print on the back which I believe is a Jo Morton.

I’ve also started puzzling the back for Quadrangle. It takes way more time to piece a backing but I have fun doing them.

We’ll see where it goes from here ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I’m continuing to sew the Starfire units and hope to get the top together this weekend. Another cheddar block is in the works as well  and I have the parts needed to make three more for the 3 x 4 setting.

It appears, before this went into time out, I found a cheddar in my stash that was almost the same cheaddar color (really, really close, like same color, different color run close) and used it to get the pieces for these extra blocks. It also appears I had a green that wasn’t so close of a match but used it to finish cutting enough HST’s for the border so some original green, some replacement green. None of the replacement green is in the blocks.

Julie has since let me know the fabrics she sent were Bella solids so do I use the green I’ve cut already or go on a search for the matching Bella green that may be a closer match. I’m am of two minds here. The triangles are already cut, but the green really is different ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿคจ๐Ÿง

Any thoughts?

Progress……

……on two projects. I continued sewing units for Starfire and parts are hanging off the design wall now, lol.

I’ve added another block to the cheddar project. Still toying with the idea of making this one three by four blocks with a cheddar border followed by a HST border. I can do this *IF* I have enough fabric.

I also sewed a heap of crumb blocks and over did trimming them as now my left wrist aches. I know better…..I know I have to spread trimming over multiple days. <<shakes head>>

Time to come up with a plan for some of these…….๐Ÿ˜œ

Happy sewing, Cherie

Finished!

I finished moving my scraps into my new drawer unit….

……8 color sorted drawers with crumb blocks in progress.  It’s a beautiful thing!

Previously they were in salad containers, puzzle boxes, etc, lined up on my cutting table.

They looked messy and I had to move them a lot but they were handy for me to use.  The drawers are just as handy and look so much better ๐Ÿ˜

I also finished hanging a present to myself.

I bought one of Wanda’s color wash quilts and I am in love!  Her post about this quilt is here and here.

Linking up with Alycia the Quilty Girl’s Finished or Not post.

Not Like the Pattern

With apologies to Kelly, I am making the crossroads blocks differently from the pattern. My luggage tag units are very wonky….I’m sure if I’d been in Kelly’s class they would be perfect. Anyway, sewing them together with the white corners to the middle looked awful so I sewed them white corners out as it hides my wonky blocks better.

I finished the sashing blocks & am getting them sewn to the star & crossroads blocks. Rows of star blocks alternated with crossroads blocks will go between these units if you can picture it, lol.

I added another cheddar block so there are now seven. I labeled them as they are not interchangeable due to the way the seams are ironed.

That is one thing I love about Bonnie Hunter’s patterns, she provides ironing instructions so all units nest or, rarely, are ironed open. And speaking of Bonnie’s quilts, I only have 22 more Birthday Girl blocks left to sew ๐Ÿ˜€.  And I have 19 of the up & the down hill Scrappy Mountain Majesty blocks sewn.  So progress on four projects!

Happy Sewing, Cherie

Package

Quilt Diva Julie asked if I would like some Christmas fabrics she was moving out of her studio. She had no way of knowing I, only the day previous, talked with DH about making a Christmas quilt since I haven’t ever made one for us.  How serendipitous was that?!?!

Imagine my utter surprise and excitement when a very, very heavy box arrived yesterday and this is what I saw on top.

Not exactly what I’d call Christmas fabric but gold so it could be in a Christmas quilt, right? I unpacked the box to find…..

……there were wasn’t just Christmas fabric.  I’m still overwhelmed with Julie’s generosity (22 yards, but who’s counting), almost speechless ๐Ÿ˜‰  My absolute favorite is the triangle fabric on top. It’s so very cool!

The sewing machine panels are fun and neutrals are always useful.  The black holly print has enough for a Christmas quilt back! And, AND, all the fabrics have been washed….. another gift because I wash all my fabrics before they hit the shelves.

Thank you, Julie ๐Ÿ’•. Ideas are percolating and the squirrels are running rampant.

‘Tis the Thanksgiving season, truly, Cherie

Finished ;-)

I finished another cheddar block…..and sewed five crossroads blocks ;-) I sorted the gift tag units into blocks so I didn’t have two of the same fabrics left for the last one. Does anyone else do this with scrappy quilts?

While doing that, I realized I should take a look at the Celtic Solstice units and start sorting them into blocks as well. Gave myself a scare when I counted the units…..that were short!!!

I started thinking about pulling colors to make the missing units when…….

I spied the “missing” units tossed out of the way on my batting rolls, WHEW!!! I’d completely forgotten about the six blocks I sewed together just before this project went into time out.

Linking up with Alycia at QuiltyGirl.

Had the two week follow up appointment for DH’s knee replacement early this am and everything is going well. No more compression socks or bandages, yay! He’s still not sleeping well but that will pass in a few weeks. He’s glad he’s not an octopus with eight legs, lol.

Cheers! Cherie

Starfire & Friends

I got all the Starfire flip corners sewn and they look like luggage tags, lol.

I started sewing them into the crossroads units and they are looking good. Notice another cheddar block has been completed, sweet! I think 9 cheddar blocks was the plan but feel like there are a lot more parts than that in the box……so maybe it’s 12 blocks? I feel like the cheddar quilt needs Baptist fan quilting which I have never done.

Happy quilting, Cherie

About Those Goodwill Bins

I mentioned I stopped at the Goodwill Bins Outlet last week which is always experience. People hang out there waiting for new bins to be brought to the floor and then it’s a mad scramble to search for treasures. Since I’m not shopping for what other folks are, I stay out of the fray and peruse the clothing bins until I spot a cool looking woven shirt.  I can almost tell by looking if it will be cotton or not.  In about 15 minutes I snagged 11 shirts @ $1.79/pound so ~$10.00.

I weighed the shirts after I deboned them……2.8 pounds so approximately 8 1/2 yards estimating 3 yards to the pound.

Last Oct Finished (or not) Friday

My recovering DH was left at home yesterday while I took off on my own. I drove over an hour to the Quilt Patch in Mount Pleasant, PA to pick up the shop hop prize I won.  I’m glad it was at this shop as this was one we didn’t make it to during the hop. I snagged a couple of red fabrics and they graciously gave me a packet from the hop with a FQ.  Definitely worth the trip. In addition, I made a stop at the Goodwill Bins Outlet to see if there were any good shirts for my shirting stash.  All in all a wonderful day out even though it rained the whole time.

Also in the picture above is a lovely seam ripper made by my friend’s husband. I can’t believe I forgot to mention it before but I had tucked it safely in my purse. He uses plastic bags and somehow ends up with these lovely handles!

Here’s the kit I won, the second one this year….I feel very fortunate.  Check out that cute panel!  That’s 7 3/4yards in…for my records ๐Ÿ˜‰

I thought I should get a handle on where I stand with a couple projects since it’s definitely Not Finished Friday here in the Moore Quilt Studio.

I have 26 and need 34 of the 54-40 or Fight blocks and have 36 and need 25 of the Birthday Girl blocks. I’m getting there…….

The mountain blocks are leftovers so I’m making more blocks so I can use them up.  I have 10 downhill blocks and now have 8 uphill blocks.  I have squares enough for 80 total blocks that can be set either 48”x75” or 60 x60”.  I want to use up all the blocks and think the 60”x60” size would be best.  I won’t be keeping this one but am not sure where it will go.

Happy Halloween! Cherie

We’re Going to Need a Bigger……..

 ……boat design wall.

Because this one is full ๐Ÿ˜‚  I got two sewing sessions in yesterday and sewed up some of those flip corners along with some blocks.

Trying to decide whether to keep or pitch the waste triangles ๐Ÿ˜ต‍๐Ÿ’ซ

See them piled up so neatly looking all innocent?  They are just another project waiting to spring….sigh.  Trashing them is looking pretty sensible right now.

I indulged in some retail therapy while waiting during DH’s surgery ๐Ÿ˜

And I love all 12 yards of them (although I ordered 4 yds of the batik on top and they only sent two, I counted all 4 yds because they are sending the other 2 yds).

So it’s still, Sew, Cherie, Sew!

Starfire Stars Are Finished

I got some sewing time in and finished off the stars for Starfire.  Sure seems like I should have more to show for the weekend but there you go ๐Ÿ˜

The next step is to sew 204 flip corners on three sides of 68 orange squares ๐Ÿ˜ณ

Sew, Cherie, sew!

Not Finished Friday

DH had knee replacement surgery this week so as you might imagine, no finishes. I’m linking up with the Quilty Girl for Finished (or Not) Friday. I did get a bit of sewing in though. I also pinned. I’m a pinner, maybe a serial pinner……..I’ll let you decide ๐Ÿ˜‚

My leader/enders are these crumb blocks and I pin the next scraps in mass quantities ๐Ÿ˜†

Above is the waiting to be ironed pile which is the result of a 20 min power sewing session.

And here’s the definitely not finished things.

Finished Quilt Pictures

For the files, final pictures of the scrappy mountain majesties donation quilt and Winter, the quilt from Sujata Shah’s Cultural Fusion book.

Winter was fun to make but I ventured way outside my comfort zone for the quilting.  I’m sort of okay with it….hoping it looks better after a run through the wash.

Happy Finishing! Cherie
