Last Oct Finished (or not) Friday

My recovering DH was left at home yesterday while I took off on my own. I drove over an hour to the Quilt Patch in Mount Pleasant, PA to pick up the shop hop prize I won.  I’m glad it was at this shop as this was one we didn’t make it to during the hop. I snagged a couple of red fabrics and they graciously gave me a packet from the hop with a FQ.  Definitely worth the trip. In addition, I made a stop at the Goodwill Bins Outlet to see if there were any good shirts for my shirting stash.  All in all a wonderful day out even though it rained the whole time.

Also in the picture above is a lovely seam ripper made by my friend’s husband. I can’t believe I forgot to mention it before but I had tucked it safely in my purse. He uses plastic bags and somehow ends up with these lovely handles!

Here’s the kit I won, the second one this year….I feel very fortunate.  Check out that cute panel!  That’s 7 3/4yards in…for my records 😉

I thought I should get a handle on where I stand with a couple projects since it’s definitely Not Finished Friday here in the Moore Quilt Studio.

I have 26 and need 34 of the 54-40 or Fight blocks and have 36 and need 25 of the Birthday Girl blocks. I’m getting there…….

The mountain blocks are leftovers so I’m making more blocks so I can use them up.  I have 10 downhill blocks and now have 8 uphill blocks.  I have squares enough for 80 total blocks that can be set either 48”x75” or 60 x60”.  I want to use up all the blocks and think the 60”x60” size would be best.  I won’t be keeping this one but am not sure where it will go.

We’re Going to Need a Bigger……..

 ……boat design wall.

Because this one is full 😂  I got two sewing sessions in yesterday and sewed up some of those flip corners along with some blocks.

Trying to decide whether to keep or pitch the waste triangles 😵‍💫

See them piled up so neatly looking all innocent?  They are just another project waiting to spring….sigh.  Trashing them is looking pretty sensible right now.

I indulged in some retail therapy while waiting during DH’s surgery 😏

And I love all 12 yards of them (although I ordered 4 yds of the batik on top and they only sent two, I counted all 4 yds because they are sending the other 2 yds).

So it’s still, Sew, Cherie, Sew!

Starfire Stars Are Finished

I got some sewing time in and finished off the stars for Starfire.  Sure seems like I should have more to show for the weekend but there you go 😏

The next step is to sew 204 flip corners on three sides of 68 orange squares 😳

Sew, Cherie, sew!

Not Finished Friday

DH had knee replacement surgery this week so as you might imagine, no finishes. I’m linking up with the Quilty Girl for Finished (or Not) Friday. I did get a bit of sewing in though. I also pinned. I’m a pinner, maybe a serial pinner……..I’ll let you decide 😂

My leader/enders are these crumb blocks and I pin the next scraps in mass quantities 😆

Above is the waiting to be ironed pile which is the result of a 20 min power sewing session.

And here’s the definitely not finished things.

Finished Quilt Pictures

For the files, final pictures of the scrappy mountain majesties donation quilt and Winter, the quilt from Sujata Shah’s Cultural Fusion book.

Winter was fun to make but I ventured way outside my comfort zone for the quilting.  I’m sort of okay with it….hoping it looks better after a run through the wash.

It’s a Quilt

Winter is finished 😊  The top is made from thrifted shirts and the backing is from gifted pieces of corduroy.

Four corners!

It is 6x8 blocks and measures 42” x 55” so a bit on the small side.  I’m estimating I used a total of 4 1/2 yards.

Friday Finish

Popping in real quick to share Quadrangle is a completed top!  It is 49 1/2” x 70”.

Glad to get it off the design wall so my other projects can share 😁

Shop Hop Fun

I had a wonderful time with my friend on the shop hop.  We had perfect weather and saw beautiful vistas as we traversed the Laurel Highlands with trees in their autumn colors.  It was a 2’ish hour drive to get to the first shop but it didn’t seem long as we talked the whole way. Of the 9 shops, we visited 5 and were still gone from 9am-7pm!  The shops gave free patterns for their shop hop quilts (kits were available) and a goodie bag along with water and snacks.  Here’s the free items I received (minus a red star FQ that didn’t make it into the picture).

I was a good girl and only bought 11 1/4 yards of fabric….two of those yards are Tilda’s 🥰🥰 so 13 1/4 yds added to stash.  I was focusing on picking up reds to use in a DGD quilt……red is her favorite color and my red stash is smaller than all the other colors.  I did pretty well on that front (there’s that free red star fabric).

I was looking for oil with a long spout for my longarm ✅ and some sharps for hand sewing ✅

A fabulous day all around, thanks for driving Linda!

Inspired by Bloggers

I am hand sewing binding and am inspired by Barbara of Cat Patches/Three Cats Ranch to show a picture of the finished corner(s).  One corner down.  It’s slow going as I used a thin bamboo batting and I have to be careful none of my stitches go through to the top.  I think I need to change to a smaller needle to help with this issue.

I was reading Wanda’s post this morning, and she said she didn’t want to turn on her iron so she started a new project.  It made me laugh because the other day I didn’t want to sew the Quadrangle blocks together so I started the cheddar project 😂.  I’m inspired to call this phenomenon the Wanda effect.  Wanda is inspiring and one could spend days reading her past blog posts.

You’ll see I have started sewing the blocks into panels so it won’t be long before this is a flimsy.

Heading out today on the Country Roads shop hop with a friend. We did all the shops last year and my friend won one of the prize baskets.  I’m guessing there will be some stash enhancements to report 😁

 Happy Quilting, Cherie

Line Jumper

I mentioned the Cheddar project was of extreme interest to me, so this should be no surprise.  Jumped right to the front of the line.  I’m pleased the block went together so well.

I might have had a second block finished if I hadn’t made three, yes three!!, mis-sewn parts on this block.  I think I’ve sewn all the ways this block can get mixed up 🙄🙄  Jack the Ripper got a work out.

Using Starfire as my leader/ender has yielded three more star blocks.

And I continued sewing Quadrangle blocks together, albeit more slowly because of the line jumper 😏

Happy sewing, Cherie

Gift Bag Interruption

I love using gift bags I’ve made but I always forget how long they take to make.  Especially true if you mis-cut and decide to just run with it.  I use the lined gift bag pattern & tutorial from Jeni Baker.  I needed three for the three birthday peeps.

But……..

Ended up making six bags, lol. Two yards of fabric used 😃

I’ve got half the sashing pieces sewn to the blocks for Quadrangle.

All the HST’s for Starfire are sewn into pairs.

And lastly, I trimmed and made binding for Winter….now to get the binding sewn on!

Cheers,  Cherie

Fall 2025 UFO List

I’m not doing the official Ravelry UFO sign up but I like the idea of finishing five projects so I’m listing some of my UFO’s below.  I would be happy to finish five but my list has more than five because, like The Joyful Quilter, I’m a moody quilter, meaning I need to be in the mood to work on a project.

So here’s the list, and this feels a bit like airing my dirty laundry to the world 🫣.

1)  Quilt and bind Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll (RRCB)!!!

2)  Finish the snap bag…..ok, it’s an easy one but it’s been hanging around like this for a year now 🤦🏻‍♀️

3)  Quilt and bind the fall table runner.  This one isn’t old as I started it in August.

4)  Finish the third quilt from broken dishes blocks made as part of the RSC many (many!) years ago.  These are all from thrifted shirts and the rows are partially together.

5)  Finish Starfire.  Again, not an old one but I really want to finish this it!

6)  Finish Quadrangle.  I’d love to have this one up next on Sophie, my longarm, after I finish RRCB.

7)  Finish the flannel donation quilt.  Should be done soon while it’s still football season.

8)  Make the last remaining broken dishes blocks into a small baby quilt.  I’ve cut sashing strips and cornerstones because some of these blocks aren’t quite 8 1/2”, oops!

9)  Finish Celtic Solstice, another Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt that’s been in the works a loooong time, just not as long as RRCB.  I have a stack of both A & B blocks already made but have A. Lot. More. To. Go.

10)  Make a table topper from these waste triangles that have been kicking around for years 🙄.

11)  Make a quilt starting with these rejects from a donation quilt I finished in July.

12)  And here’s the one I’m hanging my head in shame over.  Quilt Diva Julie sent me this project when it no longer inspired her.  I absolutely love it and jumped right in, even purchasing the Studio triangle die for it.  Well, two things collided to put this project in time out.  First, no matter how small my seams, the HST’s just wouldn’t size correctly.  I tried fudging and sewed several blocks but then neglected to have an ironing plan.  I prefer to nest my seams vs ironing them open and I HATE when I don’t plan ahead and seams don’t nest.  I finally decided to un-sew everything, figure out what size HST I could easily sew, cut all the squares to that size (3 1/4” and this is done), develop an ironing plan and get ‘er done.  This one might push itself to the front of the line as I’ve not made an all solid fabric quilt before and I adore cheddar!!

I’ll be a happy quilter if I finish five things from my list and even happier if some of the others get moved forward a bit.

Quilted & Loaded

I finished quilting the quilt on Sophie.  I took the time to look up the quilt and it is “Winter” from Sajata Shah’s Cultural Fusion Quilts.  Sorry for the night photos, but I was excited to get pictures.

You can see the different pieces of corduroy cobbled together for the backing.

I’ll get it bound this week.  I’ve loaded Roll, Roll, Cotton Boll on Sophie so it’s ready to go.  I’m hoping to get some of it quilted this week.  It’s 85” x 100”, at least that’s what the pattern says 😉 so I will take my time quilting this monster.

Because Sophie is in the basement, I put the covers on to keep things clean.  Good night, Sophie.

Happy Quilting,

Cherie

Quilting with Sophie & Oops

I started quilting the quilt that was loaded on Sophie this morning.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to quilt it but told myself to get going as this is an improv quilt and any quilting goes.  I wish I had gone with a lighter grey thread.  I will finish this one tomorrow and then load another one……because I need a couple of finishes to give me some fabric out 😬😬😬………because……..

I added 24 yards to the stash 😱.  The happy birthday fabric will be used to make some gift bags, so that will go out right away but the others, oops!!

Happy quilting,

Cherie

What? Another One?

Yes, I started another quilt, which makes three on the go.  I’m sewing the Quadrangle Jelly Roll quilt top together.

I’m working on Starfire. I have the first star block together and looks like my points will be point-y.

AND….I started a flannel fundraising quilt. It’s an Irish Chain variation, I believe, that I saw on an image search of two color quilts.  I live in the greater Pittsburgh area so black and gold is huge with the Steelers, Penguins and Pirates sports teams.

I bought a prepackaged 2 yard cut of flannel at JoAnn’s because it felt pretty thick.  I was pleased with the way it washed up so I went back and got enough for a quilt top.  Since I’m using black thread for this one, I set up my 301, Black Beauty, for this one.  So, three quilts and two machines 😁

Cheers,

Cherie
